Flowsheets

Build a process flowsheet by drag and drop

The drawing is the model. Place equipment, connect streams, specify each unit in its own view, and the flowsheet solves itself in the right order as the information arrives, the way a process engineer thinks about it.

Or describe it, and let Claude plan it: Build with AI →

The PFD canvas

Equipment from a palette, streams that snap to ports

Everything starts on the process flow diagram. Open the Equipment Palette, drag a unit onto the canvas, then drop a stream onto one of its connection dots.

  • Streams snap to the nearest free port; a mixer, a column or a block grows a new connection dot as you use one up
  • Move a unit and its connections re-route with it
  • Each stream and unit carries its key numbers on the drawing, switched on or off with PFD Values
  • Colour tells you the state at a glance: green solved, amber warning, red failed, yellow stale, grey idle
  • Drop a live stream table, a unit-ops table or a note anywhere on the sheet

Step by step

How a flowsheet gets built

A natural-gas chiller from an empty case. Every frame comes from the two-minute video.

Placing a cooler and a two-phase separator on an empty PFD canvas from the Equipment Palette

Place the equipment

A cooler and a two-phase separator, dragged from the Equipment Palette.

Material streams being dropped onto the ports of the cooler and separator to connect them

Connect the streams

Each stream dropped onto a port. The feed, the cold stream, gas and NGL.

The cooler's view with the outlet temperature set to minus 15 degrees Celsius and a 0.5 bar pressure drop

Specify the units

The cooler: outlet at −15 °C and a 0.5 bar pressure drop. The separator needs nothing more.

The feed stream's Composition tab with mole fractions for carbon dioxide, methane, ethane through n-pentane

Describe the feed

Pick the Natural Gas (PR) fluid package, then enter the composition: 2% CO2, 82% methane, ethane to n-pentane.

The whole flowsheet turning green as it solves when the last feed value is entered

It solves as the last value goes in

1,000 kmol/h at 35 °C and 60 bar. Every unit solves in order and turns green.

Report it

A stream table on the drawing. 8.6% of the feed condenses; the cooler removes 957 kW.

Solving

A solver that works the way you do

Each unit solves the moment it has what it needs. Solve All works through the whole case in the right order and skips anything whose inputs have not changed.

Recycles converge by themselves

Place a Recycle on the loop and the solver iterates it to convergence, with a convergence plot to show how it got there.

Adjust and Spec controllers

An Adjust varies one variable until another hits its target. A Spec (SET) copies a value from one object onto another. Both can reach inside sub-flowsheets.

Python Script unit

For the calculation no built-in block covers, write it in Python inside the flowsheet. A script in a case you open never runs until you enable it.

Cases open solved

Results are saved in the case file, so a case opens exactly as it was left. If a newer version of the software would give different numbers, the first Solve All says which streams moved.

Undo that stays on its sheet

Ctrl+Z undoes your own edits, not the solver’s writes, and inside a sub-flowsheet it stops at that sheet’s changes. Copy and paste work across the whole case.

Units your way

SI, or a unit set of your own with the number formats to match. Every field has its own unit list, so you can type a value in whichever unit you have.

Sub-flowsheets

Fold a section of plant into one block

A sub-flowsheet is a complete flowsheet inside a unit operation: its own streams, units, drawing and solve. On the main drawing it is one block with inlet and outlet dots. Blocks nest to any depth, and the whole case saves in one file.

A gas plant with a compressor, cooler and a Chiller sub-flowsheet block, with the Navigator listing every unit on the main sheet and inside the block, each with a green OK status chip
Main sheet: the Chiller is one block. The Navigator lists every unit in the case, inside the block too, with a live status chip.
Inside the Chiller block: a cooler and a cold separator between a stream arriving from the parent sheet and gas and NGL streams returning to it
Inside the Chiller: streams marked from parent and to parent are the block’s connections. The trail bar shows where you are.

Group and ungroup

Select units, right-click, Group Selection into Sub-Flowsheet. The streams that crossed the selection’s edge become the block’s ports. The case solves to the same numbers flat or folded.

Its own thermodynamics

Run a block’s inside on a different fluid package. Every stream is converted as it crosses, and the Boundary tab shows each crossing, before and after.

Reach inside from outside

Show an inside result on the block, or set an inside specification from it. An Adjust or a Spec on the main sheet can drive a unit at any depth.

Documents

Drawings under revision control

A case records its own history. Issue a revision when the model reaches a milestone, compare any two revisions, and note the assumptions and data sources behind them.

  • A title block and revision ribbon on every sheet
  • Print the PFD, or the whole case with one page per flowsheet
  • Export a change record of what moved between revisions

Built for the engineer who inherits a case. Most simulators can say what a model says now. Revision History says what it said last month, what changed since, and who decided the change was acceptable, and that history travels inside the case file.
